What Is Constipation?
Contrary to what you might think, have read, or been told, people do not need to have a bowel movement every day. In fact, the frequency of "normal" or regular bowel movements varies widely from person to person. However, passing a stool less than three times a week may be a sign of constipation. Most cases of constipation can be easily identified as a simple complication and treated with proper lifestyle changes or certain medications. However, chronic constipation accompanied by other serious symptoms may require additional tests to ensure that your issue does not have an underlying cause. At Denmark Digestive Health, board-certified physician of gastroenterology Dr. Vera Denmark leads our skilled team of specialists who will work with you to determine the cause of your constipation and help you resolve the issue with simple and effective solutions.
While most cases of constipation are the result of lifestyle habits that can be treated with diet modifications, certain medications, and physical activity, constipation that occurs out of nowhere could be merely a symptom of an underlying problem. Some possible causes for constipation include:
- A low-fiber diet
- Dehydration or not drinking enough water
- A sedentary lifestyle
- Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, Parkinson's disease, or multiple sclerosis
- Some medications (antidepressants, narcotics, certain blood pressure medications, and more)
- Colon, rectal, or anal cancer
- A narrowing of the colon resulting from Crohn's disease, radiation, or diverticulitis

What Treatments Are Available for Constipation?
Constipation can be effectively managed by making adjustments to one's lifestyle and diet. Our medical professionals at Denmark Digestive Health often recommend gradually increasing the intake of fiber-rich foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It's crucial to make this transition slowly to avoid potential side effects, like gas and bloating. Adequate hydration and regular physical activity are also other practical components of this approach. In other cases, patients may need to use prescription or over-the-counter mild laxatives or stool softeners to help alleviate constipation. However, these should be used only under medical guidance and not be overused or extended without approval. It’s important to closely follow the advice of our expert team so we can help you manage and improve your intestinal well-being.

Denmark Digestive Health Reviews
Amazing Office - Dr. Denmark saw me right away. I had something that was not life-threatening, but nagging and annoying. Dr. Denmark knew immediately what the issue was. In one week I was feeling better. She listened and was very compassionate and I thank her enough for that. Lilly Is the office manager and she is wonderful. She is kind and is so helpful. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I highly recommend this provider.
Dr. Denmark and Lilly are amazing - This office is simply the best. I had this issue for about 2 yrs off and on. I reached out to Lilly and they were able to see me in 2 days. Talk about fantastic. Dr. Denmark had an idea of what was happening. After meeting with her and taking the medicine for a week I am almost back to myself. Dr. Denmark is compassionate, caring and simply a great health care provider. Lilly is the office manager and she is excellent. Both of these women truly care and I am so happy I reached out. Thank you for a great office experience and I recommend Dr. Denmark highly.
Finding the BEST! - Highest praise for Doctor Vera Denmark! When eager to switch gastroenterologists I was discouraged by my previous doctor's policy. I called Dr. Denmark' s office where her assistant, Lilly, helped accommodate my wish to choose my doctor. I am forever grateful. I'd check every box EXCELLENT and 5 stars for Dr. Denmark.
Our savior!!!! - We were taken in to exam room early but doctor was 30 minutes behind. She was absolutely “worth waiting for”!!! Likely she was providing excellent care to a needy patient and that’s why she sometimes runs late. She was very attentive, thorough, thoughtful and patient. She pondered our complex situation and made an assessment that was very helpful. Next steps will be coordination of procedures and providers. Our 90 minute visit was extremely educational and helpful. We are hopeful for the first time in 8 months; 3 hospitals and many providers were not as efficient as our beloved Dr. Denmark.

When should I see a doctor about constipation?
While occasional constipation can usually be managed with dietary changes and over-the-counter remedies, you should seek medical evaluation if your symptoms are persistent, severe, or accompanied by red flags such as blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or abdominal pain. If you haven’t had a bowel movement in more than a week or notice a sudden change in your usual pattern, it's best to schedule a visit with a specialist to rule out more serious causes.
Can stress or anxiety contribute to constipation?
Yes, emotional stress and anxiety can disrupt the normal function of the digestive system and may contribute to constipation. The gut and brain are closely connected, and chronic stress can alter gut motility, slow digestion, and increase the likelihood of irregular bowel movements. Addressing stress through lifestyle changes, relaxation techniques, or therapy can often help improve symptoms.
How can I tell if my constipation is related to a medical condition?
If constipation becomes chronic or doesn’t respond to typical treatments like increased fiber, hydration, or physical activity, it may be linked to an underlying condition. Medical issues such as hypothyroidism, neurological disorders, or gastrointestinal obstructions can cause changes in bowel habits. Dr. Vera Denmark and our team at Denmark Digestive Health may recommend diagnostic tests to determine if a deeper issue is contributing to your symptoms.
